ANTARES DESIGN
A series of Green Man plaques designed and made by Gemma Goodall

A face surrounded by leaves, half hidden on the walls of many churches or in the branches and leaves of ancient trees, the Green Man appears as an age old symbol of the nature spirit, an ancestral face of the plant kingdom, a trickster among the leaves and the Lord of the Green Wood. He represents the tenacity of life and the green of nature carried through the seasons.

Every stage of designing and making these Green Man plaques is undertaken by hand by Gemma at home. She undertakes research, sketches out her designs and then makes the original models in clay. She then moulds them and casts them in a tough Jesmonite acrylic resin (this is an architectural product that is robust enough to allow these painted plaques to be hung outside without suffering any damage from the weather). She then trims them and paints them individually by hand with artists acrylic paints. Therefore they are all subtly different and unique.
They are not available anywhere else.
At the moment fifteen different Green Men are available, each at a different size. More will be added to this range soon. They are available hand painted in brown, bronzed brown, terracotta, antique terracotta, green, verdigris, mixed colour and by request in bronze. Alternatively, they are available plain white for you to paint yourself.

Herne, the Green Man, 46cm tall.
Herne the Hunter, a well-known ancient spirit found in the mystical woodlands of Britain, is a representative of the Green Man and the Celtic Horned God Cernnunos. A keeper of the trees and the animals that live there he is seen to wear a headdress of deer antlers and clothing of greenery. The legend of Robin Hood is thought to have been born from this imagery and the folklore is endless. I have recreated the traditional image of Herne back to his origins as a tree spirit and Green Man. His horns are now oak leaves and acorns, his crown is of wild roses and his beard is entwined with ivy leaves and flowers, home to a kaleidoscope of invertebrates. This plaque depicts a cornucopia of pollinators and composters, a celebration of gossamer wings and exoskeletons and a true appreciation of creatures that live among the leaves and flowers of the woods. Friend or foe, they all have their place in our delicate eco-system, cleaning our environment and making our outdoor wild spaces green and a great place to be. Try to find these creatures hidden among the leaves:
Stag Beetle, Honey Bee, Ladybird, Hoverfly, Brimstone Butterfly, Eyed Hawk Moth, Humming Bird Hawk Moth, Shield Bug, Dorbeetle, Dragonfly, Queen Hornet, Cinnabar Moth, Orb or Garden Spider, Banded Snail, Bumble Bee, Mayfly, Queen Wasp, Horntail or Wood Wasp, Earth Worm, Maybug and a Large White Butterfly Chrysalis.

A set of smaller Green Man plaques:
These are hand-painted green with bronze highlighting. Between 8 and 9 cm tall, these are good for pinning up on oak beams, beside fireplaces, on bookshelves or outside. They have also been used as Christmas tree decorations!

From left to right they are the Holly King, Mistletoe Man, Jack-in-the-Green and Willow Man.
NEW! As of November 2013, this is now a set of seven small Green man plaques, with the addition of the Tree Deva (below left), small Oak King (below center) and Yew Tree (below right).

Cost in GB pounds: 4.50 each, 16.00 for the original set of four or 28.00 for the complete set of all seven.

The Iffley 'Cat' Green Man sculpture:
The magnificent Norman church (c.1170) of St Mary in Iffley, near Oxford, is teeming with sculpted images including many representations of a cat-like face amongst foliage or disgorging beaded ribbons. This is associated with the Green Man of Norman times. Gemma has reproduced the most famous of these sculptures as a plaque (about 12 cm tall and 11 cm wide), hand-made and hand-painted.

Cost in GB pounds: 15.00.
We accept PayPal. Contact us for details or to place an order (email address at the bottom of this page).
Hand-made cards depicting this unusual 'green man' sculpture will soon be available as well.
